A fire broke out on Sunnyside Road this morning, prompting a swift response from local fire crews and police officers. Dorset Police and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Services confirmed the incident, which appeared to be a deliberate act of arson.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police reported, “We received a report at 10.40 am from the fire service in relation to a property fire at an address on Sunnyside Road in Weymouth. Officers attended the scene and liaised with the fire service. It was reported that the cause of the fire was believed to be deliberate, and one person was detained in connection with the incident.”

The fire was initially reported at 10.35 am. Two fire crews from Weymouth were dispatched to the scene. The blaze, which originated in a bedroom, was extinguished using a hose reel jet, with the fire service declaring the situation under control by 11.04 am.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue provided additional details: “A crew from Weymouth was called to a property fire on Sunnyside Road, Weymouth at 10.35 am this morning. The incident involved a fire in the bedroom which firefighters extinguished using a hose reel jet. Our stop was in at 11.04 am and police also attended.”

Residents in the area were alarmed by the sudden presence of emergency services. One resident commented, “We heard the sirens. I thought it was coming from the school.”

At the scene, the watch manager provided further insight: “The fire started from the bedding, we suspected it was set on fire but we were investigating. The person who discovered the fire did his best to put it out. Then we arrived and made sure it was out. It could have been much worse – 100 percent.”

Thanks to the prompt actions of both the fire crews and the individual who first discovered the blaze, the situation was quickly contained, preventing further damage and potential harm to other residents.
